Fr. James Sullivan, O.P., on Pope Francis' Lenten Message
How often do we put off conversion, waiting for the “next Lent” or another perfect time to begin anew? Fr. James Sullivan, O.P., reminds us: This is the Lent to start fresh. Reflecting on Pope Francis’ Lenten message—“Let us journey together in hope”—Fr. Sullivan offers wisdom on suffering, perseverance, and the importance of walking this path in communion with others.
This is an excerpt from Fr. James' talk given as part of a Lenten retreat series at St. Dominic Church in Washington, D.C.
The Sorrowful Mysteries: Embracing Suffering with Jesus' Presence
The Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary invite us to confront suffering with a heart of contrition and a deep awareness of God's presence. As Fr. James Sullivan, O.P., reflects, suffering often reveals truths we otherwise overlook and brings us closer to God. Through the lens of the prodigal son’s journey, we come to realize that suffering isn’t an end but a means to something greater—leading us back to God’s embrace. Jesus does not take away suffering, but He fills it with His presence, offering comfort and clarity.

The Joyful Mysteries: A Prayer of Love
The Joyful Mysteries invite us into the heart of love—the love that begins with the tender innocence of the baby Jesus. As Fr. James Sullivan, O.P., reflects, love is the natural response when we encounter this child, and the mysteries of the Rosary draw us into that love. True love is not about asking for something but simply giving ourselves to God. The Joyful Mysteries teach us to love with sincerity and gratitude, without expectation of return.

Our Lady and the Battle of Lepanto: Fr. Dominic Verner, O.P. at the 2024 Dominican Rosary Pilgrimage
When the Christian world faced impossible odds, Pope St. Pius V called upon the faithful to take up the greatest weapon—prayer. The beaded line to Our Lady’s throne was pulled taut, and as the rosary resounded across Christendom, Heaven responded. Fr. Dominic Verner, O.P., recounts this decisive moment in history and the role Our Lady played in securing victory.

“At the sight of the crowds, Jesus’ heart was moved with pity for them.”
Matthew 9:36
Jesus’ heart is still moved by the crowds. He sees us in the realities of our lives, in our sufferings…and he’s moved with compassion, so much so that he wants to give himself to us. In the Eucharist, Jesus is as present to us in the streets of our modern-day cities as he was when he traversed Galilee and Jerusalem two thousand years ago. Follow him where he leads you. #RealPresence

LYRICS:
Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life:
such a way as gives us breath,
such a truth as ends all strife,
such a life as killeth death.
Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength:
such a light as shows a feast,
such a feast as mends in length,
such a strength as makes his guest.
Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart:
such a joy as none can move,
such a love as none can part,
such a heart as joys in love.

Good Christian Men, Rejoice!
Now Available for Purchase:
http://dominicanfriars.org/good-christian-men-rejoice
Visit: http://dominicanfriars.org
Nearly seven hundred years ago, a Dominican friar named Henry Suso had a vision of angels singing and dancing with joy about the birth of the Infant Jesus. The German preacher and mystic poet was soon swept up by the angelic song, and penned the Christmas hymn In Dulci Jubilo as a result. In the loose translation familiar to many today, we sing,
Good Christian men, rejoice
With heart and soul and voice;
Now ye need not fear the grave;
Jesus Christ was born to save!
Calls you one and calls you all
To gain his everlasting hall.
Christ was born to save!
Watch the video of the friars of the Dominican House of Studies as they continue this tradition of celebrating Christmas with a new album, Christ Was Born to Save, (digital and physical copies available for purchase) proceeds from which will support the Dominican students in Washington, D.C. The album features such timeless favorites as Away in a Manger, O Come, All Ye Faithful, and Silent Night, along with many other beautiful carols, chants, and choral works. All the music on this album flows from our prayerful contemplation of this great mystery: that God became man to save us from ourselves, and make us more like him.
Christ was born to save. This is what caused the angels to sing and dance in Blessed Henry’s vision, and is the true source of Christmas joy. God fulfilled his promise to restore creation to friendship with him through his Chosen People. Once again, God proved faithful to a mistrustful humanity, and confounded their doubts and expectations in the most extraordinary ways. The Lord of Hosts, robed in majesty, became a lowly child, bundled in swaddling clothes. And why? That, as he shares our humanity, we may share in his divinity, by becoming adopted sons and daughters of God.
Christ was born for this. The crib points to the Cross, and to the Resurrection still further. God has truly become man, and it means that we may share in his victory over sin and death. The sacred songs and chants of Christmas recorded by our schola in the resonant acoustic of Washington’s Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land recount this tremendous mystery. “Rejoice, rejoice!” we hear in the carol Gaudete, “with nature marveling, the world has been renewed by Christ who is reigning. The closed gate of Ezekiel is passed through.” Likewise, in the beloved Marian hymn Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming, we praise the “True man, yet very God, from sin and death he saves us, and lightens every load.” The heavenly choirs announce in Hark, the Herald Angels Sing, that Christ was “Born that man no more may die, born to raise the sons of earth, born to give them second birth!”
Christ was born to save. And so we cannot help but rejoice at “the dawn of redeeming grace,” (Silent Night), as we beseech this Child, “Born to die upon the Tree…to assoil [absolve] and save us all,” (Blessed Be That Maid Mary). “Be near me, Lord Jesus,” we pray in Away in a Manger, “And fit us for heaven, to live with thee there.” For “Though an infant now we view him, he shall fill his Father’s throne, gather all the nations to him; every knee shall then bow down,” (Angels from the Realms of Glory).
Christ was born for this: that we should trust once more in God’s faithfulness, and “gain his everlasting hall.” This Christmas, may God lead us all to “rejoice with heart and soul and voice” in so great a Savior.

JD Vance, Thomas Aquinas, and the Ordo Amoris | Fr. Gregory Pine & Fr. Patrick Briscoe
With his upcoming visit to the Vatican, JD Vance went viral with his talk about Ordo Amoris. But what is the Ordo Amoris? Is it Biblical? What does St. Thomas Aquinas say about it? Am I supposed to love others more than myself? Where does the world of politics fit into the order of love? On this week's episode of Godsplaining, Fr. Gregory and Fr. Patrick teach us the proper order of love.

The Principle of Double Effect | Fr. Gregory Pine & Fr. Bonaventure Chapman
The banter is 10/10. Fr. Gregory and Fr. Bonaventure are at it again on this week's episode of Godsplaining. What is the principle of double effect? What if an effect is immoral? Are we 'allowed' to kill? What does St. Thomas Aquinas have to say about this principle?

Aquinas 101
Did Jesus Know He Was God? #AskAFriar (Aquinas 101)
Did Jesus know that he was God? Did he discover gradually the real meaning of his life, and the Father’s plan for him? Did Jesus have faith in God? Did he grow in wisdom and knowledge of God, or did he already know everything at the beginning of his life? Questions like this about Jesus growing in knowledge are simply probing what it means for God to become man. In this latest episode of Aquinas 101, join Fr. Dominic Legge, O.P., a Catholic priest and Dominican friar from the Province of St. Joseph, as he tackles some of these questions about Christ's knowledge.

5 Things People Get Wrong About Confirmation (Aquinas 101)
Is receiving the sacrament of Confirmation nothing more than graduating from religious education? Is it just the object of a mature choice to practice the Catholic faith, or a rite of passage?
No! Confirmation is much more than these common misconceptions of the sacrament. It's a sending forth, a commissioning, by which you are entering more richly into Christ himself, and into communion with all those who live in him.
In this latest episode of Aquinas 101, join Fr. Gregory Pine, O.P., a Catholic priest and Dominican friar from the Province of St. Joseph, as he debunks five common misunderstandings about Confirmation and explains what the Church really teaches about the sacrament of Confirmation.

What Is a Jubilee Year? #AskAFriar (Aquinas 101)
The Jubilee year of 2025 has been named the Jubilee of Hope. The foundation of Christian hope is in eternal life promised to us by Christ’s salvation. Our attention this year should be especially focused on living this hope more fully in our lives and introducing this hope to others. But, what exactly are Jubilee years, and why does the Church celebrate them? Join Fr. Ambrose Little, O.P., a Catholic priest and Dominican friar of the Province of St. Joseph, as he answers these questions and more in this latest episode of Aquinas 101: Big Questions, Little Answers.

The Beatitudes and the Fruits of the Holy Spirit (Aquinas 101)
What really happens when you're confirmed? In the sacrament of Confirmation, the Holy Spirit comes to complete the work God began in your baptism. The Holy Spirit also helps you to live out the beatitudes: a portrait of the very heart of Jesus Christ.
By inspiring us to practice the beatitudes, the Spirit reproduces the heart of Jesus in you and in me more and more. When the work of the Spirit comes to full realization in us, the results are called the fruits of the Spirit: a taste of the Lord's goodness you were made for.
In this Aquinas 101 video on the sacrament of Confirmation, join Fr. James Brent, O.P., a priest and Dominican friar of the Province of St. Joseph, as he explains how the Holy Spirit helps us to live out the Beatitudes and brings the likeness of Jesus to full stature in us—forming us into true, free, bold witnesses to Christ.

Why Does Confirmation Matter? The Gift of the Holy Spirit (Aquinas 101)
Why does Confirmation matter? In the Catholic Church, the sacrament of Confirmation is far more than a rite of passage — it’s a powerful encounter with the Gift of the Holy Spirit. Just as the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles at Pentecost, so too does He come to each of us in our own personal Pentecost through this sacrament.
In this Aquinas 101 video on Confirmation, Fr. James Brent, O.P., a priest and Dominican friar of the Province of St. Joseph, explains the Catholic theology behind Confirmation according to St. Thomas Aquinas and how it strengthens the grace of baptism, forming us into bold witnesses of Christ. Through this sacrament, we receive not just the Gift of the Holy Spirit, but the power to live out the fruits of the Spirit and the beatitudes — becoming more like Christ.

Do We Receive the Same Eucharist the Apostles Did at the Last Supper? #AskAFriar (Aquinas 101)
On Holy Thursday, we commemorated the Last Supper: when Jesus Christ established the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist and the institution of the priesthood. But, do Catholics today receive exactly the same Eucharist that the Apostles did at the Last Supper, now that Jesus is risen and has a glorified body? Namely, was the body of Christ present in the Eucharist at the Last Supper the body of Jesus as He was at the Last Supper, or as He would be at the Resurrection? Is the substance of Christ’s body in the Eucharist the same before and after the Resurrection? Join Fr. Ambrose Little, O.P., a Catholic priest and Dominican friar from the Province of St. Joseph, as he meditates on these mysteries in a special Easter episode of Aquinas 101: Big Questions, Little Answers!

The Powerful Grace of Confirmation (Aquinas 101)
The Catholic sacrament of Confirmation gives us grace and a share in the mystery of Pentecost. Through the sacrament of Confirmation, the same Holy Spirit who has comforted and guided the Catholic Church throughout the centuries is given to each of us in a personal way. In this sacrament, we receive the very same gift of the Holy Spirit which made the Apostles ready to preach Christ to the ends of the earth at Pentecost. In this Aquinas 101 video, join Fr. Innocent Smith, O.P., a Catholic priest and Dominican friar from the province of St. Joseph, as he explains the powerful gift of grace Catholics receive in the sacrament of Confirmation, according to St. Thomas Aquinas.

St. Thomas Aquinas famously offers five proofs of God’s existence, commonly known as the Five Ways. In these proofs, St. Thomas surprisingly makes no appeal to the Bible in order to draw his conclusions. His arguments are made from reason alone, without the help of faith in divine revelation.
But, how certain should we be that God’s existence could be known by us even if we had neither the Bible nor the supernatural gift of faith that comes to us in baptism? Can we really prove it? How would we do so? And whether or not we can do it personally, how certain should we be that it can be done at least by someone?
Fr. John Baptist Ku, O.P. will address these questions and more about the relationship between faith and reason and explain how St. Thomas Aquinas can prove God's existence by reason alone in our latest episode of Aquinas 101!

Did you know that the consequence of sin doesn't end in the confessional? While the Sacrament of Penance is a great gift that restores us to communion with God and opens up the prospect of eternal life with Him once again, it doesn't erase our memories or some of the effects of what we have done.
One of the abiding effects of sin is temporal punishment, the dregs of sin and the various attachments that stick in our souls. To deal with temporal punishment, we’ll need to undertake some kind of satisfactory penance. That's where indulgences come in — and they're more important for your spiritual life than you may think!
But, what exactly are indulgences, and why are they so important? We've all heard about indulgences in history; what does this practice look like today? And what's the difference between plenary and partial indulgences? Fr. Thomas Petri, O.P. will address these questions and explain how to gain indulgences for yourself and for the faithful departed in our latest episode of Aquinas 101!

Could a nominalist deny the existence of God? This might seem like a high-level question for philosophers and theologians. But, more people today than you think are nominalists, whether explicitly or implicitly. So, what exactly is a nominalist? And why might they have a problem with certain arguments for the existence of God? In this episode of Aquinas 101: The Five Ways, join Fr. Ambrose Little, O.P., a Catholic priest and Dominican friar from the Province of St. Joseph, as he explains how to refute nominalist objections to "the existence argument" for God.

Contemplata
Contemplata Ep 30 | 4th Paraclete Promise | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
The Lord promises to send the Holy Spirit to penetrate the hearts and minds of people who are listening to the proclamation of the gospel. And he promises that when the Spirit comes, he will convince them of sin and of righteousness and of judgment—so the fourth paraclete promise could be called the promise of convincing concerning sin. But what does this mean, to convince the world of sin? In a word, it means that the Spirit will illuminate a person's conscience to realize he or she has sinned.

Contemplata Ep 29 | 3rd Paraclete Promise | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
Why would we expect anyone today to come to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, to come to believe in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, and to come to practice the Catholic faith? The reason we expect that is because in the third Paraclete Promise the Lord promised to send us the Spirit of Truth to bear witness along with us to these truths of the faith.

Contemplata Ep 27 | 1st Paraclete Promise | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
At the Last Supper, the Lord promised to send his Spirit to dwell in each of us. And when you and I were baptized, we received the Holy Spirit in a whole new way—we came to have the very person of the Holy Spirit himself living and dwelling in the depths of our souls. You and I can also pray for this indwelling of the Holy Spirit to grow and to increase in us more and more.

Contemplata Ep 26 | What are the 5 Paraclete Promises? | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
What does it take to be confident as we pray? We need something solid to build our confidence upon. In this episode, Fr. James introduces us to what scripture scholars call paraclete promises, which are found throughout scripture and are a great reason to be confident in our prayer before God. Fr. James will point to many of these promises that God has made which can be found in scripture and, over the next five episodes, he will look specifically at the 5 paraclete promises the Lord promised to send in the Upper Room.

Contemplata Ep 25 | Why Pray the Rosary? | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
Petitionary prayer, meditation, contemplation, the Our Father, and the Hail Mary, the Glory Be. The Rosary has it all. If we stay with it and practice praying the Rosary, the different elements of it come together and gradually we realize that this prayer has the power to dispose our hearts, and the eyes of our hearts can then begin to look at the Lord with more love and affection, and the truth of what he has done for us in each one of the mysteries of his life can really leap forth for us.

Contemplata Ep 24 | How God Purifies You | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
God is a refiner's fire, and he says through the mouth of the prophet Zechariah, “I will refine them as silver is refined.” What does that mean? You and I can ask for God to plunge us into the fire, to purify us, to separate out the lead from the silver within us. And he will do it because God is good and he has these graces of purification for us. The process of purification is going to be different for each one of us, depending upon the different graces of purification God gives us.

Contemplata Ep 23 | The Name of Jesus | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
There’s one prayer in particular that’s the best prayer and it is the name of Jesus. When we call upon the name of Jesus with faith, we should expect to receive his grace. The name of Jesus will work in our hearts and will do in our hearts, in a certain way, everything that Jesus himself does in the Gospels.

“O God, come to my assistance, O Lord make haste to help me.” This prayer was taught to John Cassian and his friend Germanus by one of the desert monks, Abba Isaac, who told them if they just pray this prayer over and over again, their hearts will be set on fire. This prayer is a prayer you can pray in all circumstances.

Contemplata Ep 21 | A Busy Heart in Prayer | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
In this episode, Fr. James Brent, O.P., recounts an example of how javelin prayers can be helpful in the spiritual life as he tells us about someone he knew who was a high-powered lawyer in New York. She barely had any time for extended daily prayer but could see the people around her were looking very lost and empty. She saw in them a real desire for God and she wanted to find a way to slake their thirst somehow. By praying these short, frequent “javelin” prayers, she led a life of serious prayer in the midst of a very busy life in New York City. Her life and her heart became a point of entry for God to enter into this world.

Contemplata Ep 20 | Sending up Javelin Prayers | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
As discussed for a few episodes now, one of the principal pathways to metanoia is prayer. And one of the principal challenges to prayer is distraction. Aside from external distractions which many of us suffer from, we have interior distractions. Even the Desert Fathers, who committed their entire lives to prayer, faced interior distractions from prayer. But they found a solution—short, frequent prayers—or “javelin prayers” as they called them.

Contemplata Ep 19 | Short Prayers for Busy People | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
People—especially busy people—forget we can ask God for help with everything. No matter how busy we are, all of us are able to make frequent short prayers throughout the day. “Lord, help me with this situation at work. Lord, help me prepare the meal, etc.” Proud human beings don’t ask for help, but humble human beings live from one petition to the next. If we season the day with little short prayers, that’s a way to always have, or to develop, a life of prayer.

Contemplata Ep 18 | Life of Prayer: What's it Like? | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
When people hear the word prayer, they think about the various prayers that we say—the Our Father, the Hail Mary, the Anima Christi. That’s one sense of the word prayer. We’re called to not only say acts of prayer, but to live the life of prayer. The Catechism of the Catholic Church gives this definition: the life of prayer is the habit of being in the presence of the thrice holy God and in communion with him. Fr. James Brent, O.P., begins to unpack what the life of prayer looks like in this episode.

Contemplata Ep 17 | Metanoia | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
If the purpose of our lives is to enter into the life of the Holy Trinity and come to know something of the holy, awesome, and awe-inspiring life of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the question is, “How?” The Lord Jesus tells us the answer very clearly. In the Gospel of Mark, the first thing the Lord says is this: “The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” The Greek word for repent is metanoiete and it comes from metanoia. Metanoia means the transformation of the mind. Learn more about the pathways of metanoia in this episode of Contemplata.

Contemplata Ep 16 | The Purpose of Life | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
The purpose of our life is to know, love, and enjoy God. More specifically, the purpose of our life is to know, love, and enjoy the Holy Trinity. In this episode, Fr. James Brent, O.P. meditates on the sign of the cross, a simple gesture that contains two great truths of our faith – that the purpose of our life is to participate in the life of the Trinity and the way is to follow Jesus Christ and him crucified.

In a previous episode, we talked about the qualities of heart we need when we go to Mass. One of these qualities is thanksgiving. We need to take time to count our blessings. And two of the best ways we can prepare for Mass is to count our blessings and pray the Rosary. We can combine these two. Learn how in this bonus episode of Contemplata.

About the speaker:
Fr. John Mark Solitario, O.P. is a coordinator for campus outreach at the Thomistic Institute. He met the nuns and friars of the Order of Preachers at the Dominican Monastery of the Mother of God in his hometown of West Springfield, MA. Their lives of Christian totality, marked by sacrifice, prayer, and preaching but above all, a supernatural goodness and joy, made a huge impact on him. After studying the liberal arts and philosophy at Christendom College and teaching high school theology as a member of Providence College’s PACT program, Father entered the Dominican novitiate in Cincinnati, OH, and went on for theological studies at the Dominican House of Studies. Following the solemn profession of religious vows, he was ordained a priest of Jesus Christ in 2019. Focusing on the Universal Call to Holiness in the theology of the Spanish Dominican Juan Arintero, Fr John Mark earned his licentiate in sacred theology in 2020. He is delighted to be working with students and professors as they seek to know better the truth about God and his creation through the patronage of St. Thomas Aquinas.

About the speaker:
Michael Krom started reading Aquinas’s Summa Theologiae shortly after his conversion at the end of college. Upon learning about Flannery O’Connor’s “hillbilly Thomist” habit of reading Aquinas every night, he started studying two articles a day and completed the Summa while in graduate school at Emory University. As a professor at Saint Vincent College, he saw the urgent need for collegians and seminarians to receive a solid foundation in Aquinas’s philosophical theology. In 2020, he published Justice and Charity: An Introduction to Aquinas’s Moral, Economic, and Political Thought (Baker Academic Press), and teaches a Thomistic philosophy course each fall. In addition to continuing work on the moral, economic, and political topics covered in the book, his current research is on the influence of monastic spirituality on Aquinas; he is working on a monograph tentatively entitled Aquinas Among the Benedictines.

The Glorious Mysteries: A Prayer of Thanksgiving
The Glorious Mysteries reveal what is still to come—the joy of heaven, the fulfillment of God’s promises, and the final word of gratitude when we see Him face to face. In this reflection, Fr. James Sullivan, O.P., reminds us that our response to God should not be criticism but thanksgiving. Like St. Louis de Montfort teaches, true devotion honors Mary, contemplates her virtues, and thanks God for all He has done through her.

The Annunciation: A Scenic View on the Road to God
The Rosary is the scenic route on our journey to God, and the Annunciation is a breathtaking overlook along the way. In this reflection, Fr. James Sullivan, O.P., invites us to pause and take in the beauty of this mystery—the moment when salvation history unfolds before our eyes. Like a scenic view on a long road trip, the Annunciation reminds us to stop, reflect, and marvel at God’s plan.

The Annunciation with Fr. James Sullivan, O.P.
Fr. James Sullivan, O.P., reflects on a remarkable detail in the Annunciation Triptych (Merode Altarpiece) by the Workshop of Robert Campin. In this 15th-century painting, Jesus is shown descending from a beam of light, carrying His cross, and entering the womb of the Blessed Mother. This powerful image reveals a profound truth: from the very first moment of the Incarnation, Christ’s mission was clear — He came to save us.
As Fr. James explains, this striking depiction invites us to meditate more deeply on the mystery of the Annunciation and God’s saving love.
This video is an excerpt from Fr. James Sullivan's second conference at the Dominican Rosary Pilgrimage. Watch the full conference here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxXlpmC5I_8&list=PLl6gd_KM9BTVTVL2aLqmorBDpeonkQSCx&index=9
