Fr. Gregory Pine, O.P. on Vocations
God has made each of us to know and to love him according to a particular vocation in this life so that we may come to enjoy him for all eternity. Jesus Christ calls some men to follow him in the priesthood and the religious life. As men consecrated to the word of God, Dominican friars live a fraternal common life of prayer and study, having one heart and one soul seeking God, and are sent to preach the saving truth of Jesus Christ for the salvation of souls.

Dominican Friars Celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King
This year, the Solemnity of Christ the King fell on Thanksgiving weekend, one of the busiest weekends of commerce in midtown Manhattan. And Christ the King processed down Fifth Avenue, hidden under the guise of bread, accompanied by his followers. Many people today will not cross the threshold of a church to find God, so it is in Eucharistic processions that God comes to them. Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, crossed the threshold of St. Vincent Ferrer Church to go out to the world—to the world he made, to the world he loves, to the world he saves. #Eucharist

The Life of the Friars
Six Paths To The Priesthood
Six men share what inspired them to serve God and His people as Catholic priests in the Order of Preachers.
Corpus Christi in New York City
“At the sight of the crowds, Jesus’ heart was moved with pity for them.”
Matthew 9:36
Jesus’ heart is still moved by the crowds. He sees us in the realities of our lives, in our sufferings…and he’s moved with compassion, so much so that he wants to give himself to us. In the Eucharist, Jesus is as present to us in the streets of our modern-day cities as he was when he traversed Galilee and Jerusalem two thousand years ago. Follow him where he leads you. #RealPresence
Nine New Dominican Priests
Nine Dominican Friars were ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Earl Fernandes on Saturday, May 20, 2023. In his homily, Bishop Fernandes told the newly ordained priests “to reflect on the stream of blessings that flow from the hands of priests—your hands. Each of you, called to bless, are a blessing to your Order and to the whole Church.” #Priesthood

BLACKFRIAR MUSIC: "Come, My Way"
Check out our website:
http://blackfriarfilms.org
LYRICS:
Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life:
such a way as gives us breath,
such a truth as ends all strife,
such a life as killeth death.
Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength:
such a light as shows a feast,
such a feast as mends in length,
such a strength as makes his guest.
Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart:
such a joy as none can move,
such a love as none can part,
such a heart as joys in love.

Fr. Austin Dominic Litke, O.P., Fr. Bob Koopman, O.S.B., & Leah Sedlacek perform a new arrangement of the beautiful 17th century hymn, "The Call", composed by George Herbert and later made famous by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Good Christian Men, Rejoice!

Visit: http://dominicanfriars.org
Nearly seven hundred years ago, a Dominican friar named Henry Suso had a vision of angels singing and dancing with joy about the birth of the Infant Jesus. The German preacher and mystic poet was soon swept up by the angelic song, and penned the Christmas hymn In Dulci Jubilo as a result. In the loose translation familiar to many today, we sing,
Good Christian men, rejoice
With heart and soul and voice;
Now ye need not fear the grave;
Jesus Christ was born to save!
Calls you one and calls you all
To gain his everlasting hall.
Christ was born to save!
Watch the video of the friars of the Dominican House of Studies as they continue this tradition of celebrating Christmas with a new album, Christ Was Born to Save, (digital and physical copies available for purchase) proceeds from which will support the Dominican students in Washington, D.C. The album features such timeless favorites as Away in a Manger, O Come, All Ye Faithful, and Silent Night, along with many other beautiful carols, chants, and choral works. All the music on this album flows from our prayerful contemplation of this great mystery: that God became man to save us from ourselves, and make us more like him.
Christ was born to save. This is what caused the angels to sing and dance in Blessed Henry’s vision, and is the true source of Christmas joy. God fulfilled his promise to restore creation to friendship with him through his Chosen People. Once again, God proved faithful to a mistrustful humanity, and confounded their doubts and expectations in the most extraordinary ways. The Lord of Hosts, robed in majesty, became a lowly child, bundled in swaddling clothes. And why? That, as he shares our humanity, we may share in his divinity, by becoming adopted sons and daughters of God.
Christ was born for this. The crib points to the Cross, and to the Resurrection still further. God has truly become man, and it means that we may share in his victory over sin and death. The sacred songs and chants of Christmas recorded by our schola in the resonant acoustic of Washington’s Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land recount this tremendous mystery. “Rejoice, rejoice!” we hear in the carol Gaudete, “with nature marveling, the world has been renewed by Christ who is reigning. The closed gate of Ezekiel is passed through.” Likewise, in the beloved Marian hymn Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming, we praise the “True man, yet very God, from sin and death he saves us, and lightens every load.” The heavenly choirs announce in Hark, the Herald Angels Sing, that Christ was “Born that man no more may die, born to raise the sons of earth, born to give them second birth!”
Christ was born to save. And so we cannot help but rejoice at “the dawn of redeeming grace,” (Silent Night), as we beseech this Child, “Born to die upon the Tree…to assoil [absolve] and save us all,” (Blessed Be That Maid Mary). “Be near me, Lord Jesus,” we pray in Away in a Manger, “And fit us for heaven, to live with thee there.” For “Though an infant now we view him, he shall fill his Father’s throne, gather all the nations to him; every knee shall then bow down,” (Angels from the Realms of Glory).
Christ was born for this: that we should trust once more in God’s faithfulness, and “gain his everlasting hall.” This Christmas, may God lead us all to “rejoice with heart and soul and voice” in so great a Savior.

You might wonder, why read St. Thomas Aquinas? Pope Leo XIII writes that Saint Thomas inherited the intellect of all the ancient doctors of the Church. He is esteemed as a bulwark and glory of the Catholic faith. St. Thomas serves not as a museum-piece, but as a wise interlocutor in our modern world.

“Three things are necessary for the salvation of man: to know what he ought to believe, to know what he ought to desire, and to know what he ought to do.” -St. Thomas Aquinas
St. Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologiae is his most perfect and influential work. The Summa is structured as a movement of going out from and returning to God (called—in Latin—the exitus-reditus schema). So, one begins by considering God in himself, and then the procession of creatures from God, and then their return to him in the moral life through Christ and his sacraments.

“He has granted to us His precious and very great promises, that through these you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of passion, and become partakers in the divine nature.” (2 Peter 1:4)
Christian theology considers who God is in himself, in his own inner life. The mystery of the Trinity is the primary mystery in Christianity because it concerns who God is and the fact that God has willed to offer us knowledge of himself—even participation in his own divine life by grace.

The principle of non-contradiction stands as a kind of witness that human beings can know something solid and true about reality as a whole. The great calling of philosophy and metaphysics is to say much more about reality as a whole.

The object of metaphysics is being itself. Everything that has being is in some way one and unified, true or intelligible, good and thus desirable, beautiful and therefore pleasing. At this point, when you’ve begun thinking why that might be the case, you’ve arrived; you’re doing metaphysics.

How can the water in a river always be flowing by and yet it remains the same river?
By wrestling with this and various puzzles regarding change, Aristotle discovered the distinction between act and potency or actuality and potentiality. Aristotle realized that all the things in nature are a blend of act and potency, like the water. For example, an acorn is potentially a fully-grown oak tree; a child is potentially a grown man; and, the water in the ocean is potentially a rain cloud over land. Aristotle realized that change consists of the actualization of the potentiality latent within the things of nature.

What is truth? What is love? What is justice?
In asking the question, one asks for the essences of things, or more simply, what they are. The ancient philosopher Plato called the answers to these questions the “forms.” Aristotle believed in the forms, but saw them as existing in things themselves. Thus, all things of nature are composed of matter and form, and this composite constitution is called hylomorphism.

“All chairs are quite different.” - HG Wells
“If they were so different you could not call them all chairs.” - GK Chesterton
The Pre-Socratics tried to explain everything as elemental fire or water or spirit. Many contemporary scientists try to explain everything as ordered bundles of chemicals, molecules, and atoms. The problem here is that these building blocks themselves are diverse. How do we account for that? The attempt to reduce everything to material bits is ill-fated. Reality is not simply built up from the bottom; it is also influenced from the top down. While the essence of a thing tells you what it is, the existence of a thing tells you that it is.

“It is clear, therefore, that an intelligence is form and existence, and that it has existence from the First Being, which is existence alone. And this is the First Cause, which is God.” - St. Thomas Aquinas, On Being and Essence
If everything in this world that we experience receives its existence from another and is caused, that can only be explained with reference to others that cause it to be. Now, regardless of how far you pass the buck, you cannot have an actual infinite series of such causes. There has to be some being giving existence to everything; this, all men call God. For, by contrast with everything else that we encounter, God exists by nature. He doesn’t receive his existence from anything; existence is proper to the very essence of God, so God exists essentially. For everything else, though, there is a real distinction between essence and existence.

There’s one prayer in particular that’s the best prayer and it is the name of Jesus. When we call upon the name of Jesus with faith, we should expect to receive his grace. The name of Jesus will work in our hearts and will do in our hearts, in a certain way, everything that Jesus himself does in the Gospels.

Contemplata Ep 22 | God Helps You | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
“O God, come to my assistance, O Lord make haste to help me.” This prayer was taught to John Cassian and his friend Germanus by one of the desert monks, Abba Isaac, who told them if they just pray this prayer over and over again, their hearts will be set on fire. This prayer is a prayer you can pray in all circumstances.

Contemplata Ep 21 | A Busy Heart in Prayer | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
In this episode, Fr. James Brent, O.P., recounts an example of how javelin prayers can be helpful in the spiritual life as he tells us about someone he knew who was a high-powered lawyer in New York. She barely had any time for extended daily prayer but could see the people around her were looking very lost and empty. She saw in them a real desire for God and she wanted to find a way to slake their thirst somehow. By praying these short, frequent “javelin” prayers, she led a life of serious prayer in the midst of a very busy life in New York City. Her life and her heart became a point of entry for God to enter into this world.

Contemplata Ep 20 | Sending up Javelin Prayers | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
As discussed for a few episodes now, one of the principal pathways to metanoia is prayer. And one of the principal challenges to prayer is distraction. Aside from external distractions which many of us suffer from, we have interior distractions. Even the Desert Fathers, who committed their entire lives to prayer, faced interior distractions from prayer. But they found a solution—short, frequent prayers—or “javelin prayers” as they called them.

Contemplata Ep 19 | Short Prayers for Busy People | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
People—especially busy people—forget we can ask God for help with everything. No matter how busy we are, all of us are able to make frequent short prayers throughout the day. “Lord, help me with this situation at work. Lord, help me prepare the meal, etc.” Proud human beings don’t ask for help, but humble human beings live from one petition to the next. If we season the day with little short prayers, that’s a way to always have, or to develop, a life of prayer.

Contemplata Ep 18 | Life of Prayer: What's it Like? | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
When people hear the word prayer, they think about the various prayers that we say—the Our Father, the Hail Mary, the Anima Christi. That’s one sense of the word prayer. We’re called to not only say acts of prayer, but to live the life of prayer. The Catechism of the Catholic Church gives this definition: the life of prayer is the habit of being in the presence of the thrice holy God and in communion with him. Fr. James Brent, O.P., begins to unpack what the life of prayer looks like in this episode.

Contemplata Ep 17 | Metanoia | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
If the purpose of our lives is to enter into the life of the Holy Trinity and come to know something of the holy, awesome, and awe-inspiring life of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the question is, “How?” The Lord Jesus tells us the answer very clearly. In the Gospel of Mark, the first thing the Lord says is this: “The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” The Greek word for repent is metanoiete and it comes from metanoia. Metanoia means the transformation of the mind. Learn more about the pathways of metanoia in this episode of Contemplata.

Contemplata Ep 16 | The Purpose of Life | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
The purpose of our life is to know, love, and enjoy God. More specifically, the purpose of our life is to know, love, and enjoy the Holy Trinity. In this episode, Fr. James Brent, O.P. meditates on the sign of the cross, a simple gesture that contains two great truths of our faith – that the purpose of our life is to participate in the life of the Trinity and the way is to follow Jesus Christ and him crucified.

Contemplata Bonus Episode | Rosary of Gratitude | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
In a previous episode, we talked about the qualities of heart we need when we go to Mass. One of these qualities is thanksgiving. We need to take time to count our blessings. And two of the best ways we can prepare for Mass is to count our blessings and pray the Rosary. We can combine these two. Learn how in this bonus episode of Contemplata.

Contemplata Ep 15 | The Friends of God | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
“You become what you eat,” they say. If you eat the body and drink the blood of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, who do you become? You become him. You become another Christ in this world. You learn to live his life – his supernatural and divine life. You come to know his Father. You begin to breathe his Spirit. You learn to walk as he walked. You learn to pray. You learn to listen to God. You learn to lay down your life in humble service of other people. In short, you and I learn to live in a personal friendship with God.

Contemplata Ep 14 | Formed by Heaven | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
At Mass, the people are called to co-offer the sacrifice. But how, precisely, do we do so? It is principally an affair of the heart. It is a matter of intention. Find out in this episode how to form such an intention at Mass.

Contemplata Ep 13 | Mass without Communion? | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
Very often, when we think of going to Mass or not going to Mass, the question in our minds is, “What I will get out of it.?” We do not think in terms of what God is worth or how, in the Mass, we render to God the worship he deserves from us. But what is God worth? Even if you can’t receive communion that day, you and I have been given the grace, the honor, and the privilege to join with Jesus Christ himself in offering true worship to the Father at the holy sacrifice at the Mass. That is reason enough to go. God is reason enough to go.

Contemplata Ep 12 | Your PART at the Mass | Fr. James Brent, O.P.
Pope Pius XII once said that “all the faithful should be aware that to participate in the Eucharistic Sacrifice is their chief duty and supreme dignity.” But how do we do so? What is our part in the Mass? The answer is simple. Our hearts should have the same qualities of the heart of Jesus Christ in his worship of the Father and our hearts should be a reflection of his. But what are the qualities of the heart of Jesus in his worship? Fr. James Brent, O.P., ponders some of these qualities of the heart of Jesus in worship in this episode of Contemplata.

June 2024 Novena | Dominican Rosary Pilgrimage
We are 6 months into our 9-month Rosary Novena prayer!
Our Lady was given to us by Christ when he told the Beloved Disciple, “Behold your mother.” In that giving of his mother, Our Lady is given to us too—to walk with us in this life, in our sufferings and in our joys. In his reflection for this month’s Rosary Novena, Fr. Patrick Briscoe, O.P., tells us this same message from the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe—that we should always turn to Our Lady.
The Dominican Friars began the Dominican Rosary Pilgrimage as a means for the faithful to deepen their understanding that Our Lady wants us to always turn to her in our needs, and we can turn to her when we pray the Rosary.
Please join us in praying this month’s Rosary Novena Prayer for the success of the Dominican Rosary Pilgrimage! Pray that many will join us for the upcoming Dominican Rosary Pilgrimage this September 28, 2024, so that many souls may be drawn closer to Jesus through Mary.

May 2024 Novena | Dominican Rosary Pilgrimage
We are halfway through our 9-month Rosary Novena prayer! This month’s Rosary Novena reflection is given by Fr. John Paul Walker, O.P., pastor of St. Gertrude’s parish in Cincinnati.
Fr. John Paul reminds us that inevitably we have times in our life when it seems we are alone, but if we stay close to Our Lady, we are never alone. Our Lady is beside us in our daily lives, in all of our joys and our sorrows. She wants to be close to us, she wants to intercede for us here on earth, so that one day we can be with her in heaven.
Keep praying this Novena prayer and we hope, indeed we pray, that many of you can join us for our second annual Dominican Rosary Pilgrimage—coming up in 4 short months!—September 28 in Washington, DC!
